Would it be technically possible to make gecko-mediaplayer a firefox
add-on? This has the strong advantage of enabling automatic updates in
a simple way for the user.

No, too many requirements. But if you use a proper repository that is
updated often, you should get the newest version of gecko-mediaplayer
and gnome-mplayer usually within a week of when I release the code.

I know rpmfusion, puts out releases fairly quickly.

I can't seem to find an even vaguely uptodate repository for ubuntu.
I was hoping getdeb might but it seems not unless I have missed it.

Pardus also puts out releases quickly :) Usually at the same day of
the release Pardus packages hit the test repos, and a few days to a
week hit the stable repo if passes testing procedures.
